I worked on an array of projects for different language services at
BBC World Service including Mundo (Spanish speaking), Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Urdu and Vietnamese. Understanding audience diversity and issues of accessibility were key in the design process.
To signify Hugo Chávez’s 10 years in power, I worked with
BBC Mundo to create a portal packed with new stories, video, and other multimedia.
I worked on the visual and interaction design, aware of the need to be balanced in use of imagery of the controversial Venezuelan leader.
The project received a massive amount of visits from the Spanish speaking world, made evident by hits to number of hits on the site as well as the vast array of comments in the discussion forum.
With thousands of deaths and many wanting to leave the country,
BBC Mundo commissioned a large project looking at the social impact of narcotics trafficking in Mexico.
Combining the work of a Mexico City based illustrator Watchavato, the challenge was to produce a Flash piece that allowed for easy navigation of the large amount of stories, film and reactions to the crisis whilst sitting within the BBC World Service brand.
The project went on to win Best Global News Output - Future Media, at the BBC Global Reith Awards 2009
To coincide with The 2008 London Film Festival, BBCRussian.com wanted to showcase British films, actors and the industry's global influence.
There was a requirement for the user to interact with the stories allowing for a use of Flash - thus enabling a more playful way for the user to choose the content.


The BBC World Service is in its third year promoting The Next Big Thing, a BBC competition in search for the world's best new music.
A portal area was needed using a modern visual language to attract a younger user and enable easy navigation for the user who required information to send in their entry.


A redesign of BBC World Service:The Story of Africa micro-site was commissioned to reflect the rich diversity of the continent - in history, music, religion and its influences on other parts of the world.

To increase the amount of User Generated Content on World Service websites, users were given the chance to report for the BBC from anywhere in the world.
A portal area was designed to showcase the diversity of reporters and subjects, using high impact photography in a slideshow to project a live and frequently updated feel.

A complete redesign of the popular Learning English website was needed to bring it in line with the BBC World Service look and feel and to improve its current navigation.
Developed from wireframe designs, a new site with improved visual language was launched early in 2009.

On a day to day basis, there is a great variety of design needed at BBC World Service, from medal illustrations for the China.com.cn site in the lead up to the Beijing Olympics, to Illustrated icons for schedule pages to Radio programme graphics for the new 1024 Persian site.
Each time the awareness of the diversity of the audience is needed - adapting design style where necessary.
